24 Joyful Headbands Inspired by Amanda Gorman’s Prada Accessory

Not only did the young poet laureate move a nation to happy, hopeful tears, but she did so in style too.

Yesterday, all eyes were on the nation’s youngest inaugural poet, Amanda Gorman, who delivered a deeply rousing and uplifting address to her nation. She was first discovered by Jill Biden in 2017 when Gorman read her poem “In This Place: An American Lyric” at the Library of Congress. The Bidens then asked Gorman to partake in the inaugural festivities with a reading of an original poem to mark the occasion. In doing so, she joined the ranks of Maya Angelou and Elizabeth Alexander (both spoke at previous ceremonies). As the world watched her recite “The Hill We Climb,” (“being American is more than a pride we inherit / it’s the past we step into / and how we repair it”), I was struck by her sense of grace and beyond-her-years wisdom. I also couldn’t help but notice her absolutely incredible fashion look, which included a satin padded Prada headband.

It’s an accessory that appeared on the runway of the Italian fashion house’s spring 2019 show. Miuccia Prada added headbands to every single model in an array of puffed, high-sheen satins (like the one worn by Gorman), as well as thinner versions embellished with crystals and bows. Gorman wore hers with a pair of gold hoop earrings by Nikos Koulis and an Of Rare Origin ring (both gifted to her by Oprah), all anchored by a double-breasted Prada coat the color of optimistic sunshine. But it was the headband that captured our fashion fancies, and it made for an epic addition to the history of hats and headwear worn at inaugural ceremonies. Hers was less a headpiece, but in the spirit of her incredible reading, more like a crown.

At the moment, Gorman’s red-hot headband is sold out. Bouncing from prada.com to other luxury retails yields zero inventory. The good news is that the headband comes in a variety of colors (some still available at the time of this story’s publication). Shop it here, along with a selection of other regal and joyful headbands à la Gorman.
