Anna Sui’s Mod Makeup Was Inspired by This Cult Jane Birkin Film

For Anna Sui fall 2021, makeup artist Pat McGrath dreamed up a trio of eye looks firmly entrenched in the mod ’60s.

The '60s have remained a constant thread throughout Anna Sui's career. For fall 2021, the designer dipped into her favorite film archive and landed on a cult classic firmly entrenched in the mod scene. “The collection inspiration came from the 1968 movie Wonder Wall, which was produced by George Harrison," explains Pat McGrath, Sui's longtime collaborator who conceptualized this season's makeup looks. "It was about a swinging ’60s fashion model living next door to a conventional scientist, who is glimpsing a view into her colorful, beautiful and psychedelic world.” The actress who played said '60s model was none other than Jane Birkin, who stepped into her role as Penny Lane (yes, like the song) with a lineup of chic, cut-crease eye makeup looks.
