At the VMAs, Lil Nas X Confirms the Mullet Is the Hairstyle of the Moment

Lil Nas X calls his upcoming Montero album “the future.” His business-in-the-front bangs and flowing spirals feel like the now.

“I look a lil' good?” Montero Lamar Hill, better known as Lil Nas X, jokingly asks MTV Video Music Awards Pre-Show host Jamila Mustafa on the red carpet at Barclay’s Center. The singer has swirled onto the screen in a curly, layered mullet that flows past the lapel of his sparkling lavender Atelier Versace look. At first blush, it’s a direct reference to Prince’s Purple Rain days, and confirms that after a year of pandemic ponytail cuts, the mullet is alive and well.

The striking hair look is accompanied by a winged theme: A dangling butterfly earring catches the light, framed by the party-in-the-back section of the ‘do. On Lil Nas X’s left pinkie, a matching butterfly can be seen twinkling in the glow of paparazzi flashes as he cradles a faux baby bump. Perhaps it’s all a reference to his debut “Montero” album, a “world-stopper” that debuts this Friday, September 17th. He says the direction of the album is “the future,” but his business-in-the-front bangs and flowing spirals feel like the now.
