Attersee’s Isabel Wilkinson Schor on the Subtly Scented Body Lotion She Uses as a Perfume

The designer shares her ultimate beauty indulgence, a milky body lotion from a famed Italian apothecary.

In the head-spinning age of multistep skin-care routines and mic-drop makeup launches, The One is a space for minimalists to sound off on the single beauty product that’s found a longtime spot in their carefully curated routines.

When the pandemic forced Isabel Wilkinson Schor, the well-traveled former digital director of T Magazine, to shelter in place with her husband and young daughter last year, she, like so many others suddenly confined to their homes, found herself consumed with wanderlust. “I envisioned this dreamy seaside vacation,” Wilkinson Schor recalls. She also imagined the carefree, polished pieces that she would pack: roomy cabana-striped caftans, drop-shoulder shirts with matching shorts, and soft linen dresses accented with braided trim and rows of silky fringe, all of which can now be found in her just-launched clothing and accessories line Attersee.

At the same time, as she toggled between FaceTime fittings and Zoom meetings with Italian textile mills, one item in her small stable of cosmetics took on heightened significance. She first came across Santa Maria Novella’s milky body lotion at the famed Florentine apothecary a number of years ago. In lockdown, “it gave me that same feeling of escape, that connection to a different world,” she says, noting that she likes to rub the velvet-like cream onto her neck and décolletage after bathing, and even uses it in place of a perfume. In our newly reopened world, perhaps someone will catch a trace of its barely-there gardenia and rose scent lingering on her skin as they lean in to embrace her, but ultimately that’s not what matters: “There’s something private and intimate about the ritual of it,” she muses. “It’s become a beautiful little minute of my day that I really treasure.”
