Co’s Stephanie Danan on Her $6 Solution for Glowing, Moisturized Skin

“It’s the most basic thing—and the most effective,” says the Los Angeles-based designer.

“I’m a complete minimalist,” Stephanie Danan, one-half of the Los Angeles-based label Co, tells me from the Rudolph Schindler Hollywood Hills house she calls her home and headquarters. Though the film exec-turned-designer could easily be referring to her sartorial impulses—ultra-refined, roomy silhouettes, as seen in Co’s new spring 2022 lineup—she’s actually deep in conversation about the virtues of a bare face. “When we start to put makeup on, we start to look older weirdly,” she continues. Simply put: “Makeup-free skin is more powerful.”

Save for the occasional celebratory red lip, Danan tends to her lit-from-within complexion not with concealer and contour sticks, but rather regular detoxes, sweat sessions (hot yoga and Tracy Anderson are favorites), and an arsenal of rich creams and oils—not to mention one surprising drugstore find: “My secret weapon is zinc oxide,” shares the Morocco-born skin-care enthusiast, who began using the protective treatment after developing perioral dermatitis two years ago. The flare-up soon went down, but the white-tubed ointment earned a permanent place in her cosmetics cabinet. “I noticed that it kept my skin moisturized throughout the day and it gave me a glow,” she continues. Now, she mixes a dab in with her Augustinus Bader lotion every morning, tapping it across her face and neck. “It’s the most basic thing,” she adds with a laugh, “and the most effective.”
