Elle Fanning Takes This TikTok Makeup Trend to the Red Carpet

It’s perfect for fall.

For last night's 2021 LACMA Art + Film Gala presented by Gucci, Elle Fanning opted to lean into the brand's darkly romantic sensibilities. This translated to a slicked updo (courtesy of hairstylist Jenda) featuring deep roots and onyx accessories, a flick of black liquid liner, abundant blush, and a sophisticated adaptation of a tried-and-true noir beauty note: wine-colored lips.

Neatly painted aside from a slight diffusion outside of Fanning's lipline, the merlot lipstick (supplied by makeup artist Kate Synnott), exuded moody cool and seasonal sultriness. And while the pout fit perfectly within the narrative of Fanning's Gucci moment, imagining the same lip paired with a roomy sweater and denim conjures a similar vibe—which is likely why wine-stained lips have found recent fans on TikTok, who favor this very literal set of stains. A lip hued in burgundy or merlot provides effortless glamour in a single step, as if the wearer simply dipped a forefinger in a favorite vintage and applied directly. That said, we recommend products for a more reliable interpretation of this fanciful notion.

Here, three more consistent (and long-lasting) means of achieving a wined lip—whether you favor the black cherry of zinfandel or a berried coat of sangria.
