From Bouffants to Beaded Box Braids, Moschino Served Up Epic ’90s-Inspired Hair
True to form, Moschino's show in Bryant Park today had no shortage of wow moments. But the duet of directional, ’90s-inspired hair looks crafted by legendary hairstylist Danilo still managed to swivel heads—and then some.

The first complement to designer Jeremy Scott's ladies-who-lunch theme was the parade of sky-scraping bouffants. It was a tribute to the classic teased style in its many iconic iterations, from Breakfast at Tiffany's Holly Golightly to Cindy Crawford in the ’90s. “It was supposed to look like she did it herself with, of course, a heightened fashion sense to it,” explains Danilo, who amped up the volume on the gravity-defying silhouette by using the French Lace method—backcombing with a hair brush instead of a comb for a “fluffier” finish—and blasting roots with R+Co’s Dry Volume spray before setting the teased twist with Vicious strong hold hairspray. And if you noticed scatters of contrasting highlights woven through, that was no accident. “Part of sweeping it back was to showcase those chunky placements of color,” says Danilo, name-checking references including Golightly’s golden-streaked brunette bouffant and Crawford’s face-framing strips of blonde. The secret behind the temporary tints? Custom-mixed Color Wow hair powder palettes applied to random sections.
Then, between the bouffants, came the cascades of beautiful rainbow-beaded box braids—another nod to the ’90s with a playful twist on the decade’s love of tartan. “We were mimicking plaid with these different, asymmetrical layers of color that really brought another textile dimension,” explains Danilo, who was sourcing the look’s “gumball”-sized plastic beads up until 1:30 a.m. the evening before. “You could see it in the movement...when one layer would brush away, more brilliance of color would come shining through. It was a bit of a dance of pattern.”
While the dual hairstyles were as hyperbolic as the collection itself, they were rife with inspiration for statement-making—and subversively sophisticated—’90s hair. How big or colorful you want to go is up to you.
