Jada Pinkett Smith took to Instagram to debut a fresh buzz cut—and the empowering reasoning behind it.
Jada Pinkett Smith Makes Like Daughter, Willow, With a Fresh Buzz Cut
Like mother, like daughter. The aforementioned adage was flipped boldly on its head by Jada Pinkett Smith, who took to Instagram yesterday to show off a freshly buzzed mane, as inspired by daughter Willow Smith. “Willow made me do it because it was time to let go,” wrote Pinkett Smith in the accompanying caption. “BUT … my 50’s are bout to be divinely lit with this shed.” Aside from the term shed, which is in of itself a decidedly clever revelation, Pinkett Smith's share showcased a radiant complexion, free to shine in all its lustrous glory.
For her part, Willow re-adopted the style back in March of 2020, her lengths shorn by collaborator Tyler Cole as part of an exhibit at the Geffen Contemporary at the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles. Smith's haircut came after the two spent 24 hours in a glass room at MOCA enacting a performance art piece around the eight stages of anxiety, pausing only for brief food and bathroom breaks. Pinkett Smith celebrated her daughter's feat—which culminated in the release of The Anxiety, an album created with Cole—posting the moment on social. “The start of the new beginning,” wrote the proud mother. “Willow Smith at her interactive experience. My baby shaved her head! Again!”
Mothers inspiring the beauty detailing of daughters is an eternal means of passing on tradition and celebrating roots. But the reverse? In this case, Pinkett Smith's new 'do is proof that we all have an immense amount to learn from one another in regard to strength, confidence, and letting go.
