The musician turned to Pat McGrath makeup for a next-level smokey eye inspired by runways past.
Kid Cudi Brings Emo Beauty to the Met Gala Red Carpet
On tonight’s Met Gala red carpet, Kid Cudi reminded us that emo never dies, and angst isn’t just for teens. The American rapper’s acid green dye job and sooty eye makeup nodded at Dennis Rodman’s ’90s party days, or the pop punk revival seen in a recent return of the noughties genre’s figureheads like Travis Barker and Avril Lavigne. Still, technically, the look was a bit more meta: In collaboration with Pat McGrath, makeup artist Renny Vasquez used Mother’s eponymous cosmetics line to achieve a hollowed-out eye makeup look. Cudi’s Met Gala gaze leveled up a Pat McGrath runway aesthetic designed for Ricardo Tisci’s Givenchy Spring-Summer 2010 runway. A dozen years later, the inkier adaptation seen this evening speaks to the mood of today.
To play up his clear vinyl Louis Vuitton JNCO-esque pants and cerulean sweatshirt (on Saturday, Cudi sat front row at Studio 189’s NYFW show with an electric blue fade in the same shade), the musician synced up with McGrath’s team. “Pat has always been an artist with a ‘use without caution’ motto when it comes to makeup,” says Vasquez of planning a look that pushed similar boundaries. A longtime fan, tonight was Vasquez’s first time working with Cudi, though the pair texted ahead of the event to prepare for what the makeup artist describes as a “subversively smokey black eye” using a mix of Mothership I: Subliminal eyeshadow palette in Xtreme Black lined with the line’s Dark Star 006 kit’s PermaGel Ultra Glide Eye Pencil in a shade of the same name. The night’s rhinestone eye trend seen on Amanda Gorman and Ella Emhoff went further into the depths with glints of onyx sparkles. As a finishing touch, Lip Fetish Balm in Noir—a sheer, nearly undetectable black lipstick—delivered a modern remix fit for goths and emos alike.
