Looking for a Fresh Way to Wear Lipstick? Ulla Johnson’s Runway Offers Inspiration

Looking for inspiration in one's surroundings isn't a challenge at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. Today inside its sprawling grounds at the Ulla Johnson show, makeup artist Romy Soleimani not only riffed on the beauty of the flowering plants, but considered the bigger theme of beginning anew.

The ultimate signal of starting fresh? “A natural lip with a little hit of electric color,” explains Soleimani, who accented each model’s pout with a soft wash of Bobbi Brown Crushed Lip Color in bright tangerine Sunset or magenta Punch on the center of the mouth. “The lips look like they’re blossoming,” she explains of the gradiated, soft-focus effect, achieved by using a small lip brush to layer on different tones, going deeper at the center and ombréing the color out. “It's this new bloom feeling of a new chapter, something that feels uplifting and positive.”

Carrying the same spirit into the overall look, Soleimani sought to marry the themes of earthiness and vibrant renewal. “Plump, juicy skin” supercharged with Noble Panacea’s The Brilliant Prime radiance serum was enhanced with minimal coverage and touches of highlighter for a lit-from-within finish, while lids were washed with a warm dusty clay shadow and the outer lashes were punctuated with swipes of indigo colored mascara. Finally, complementing the botanical-inspired color palette were clean taupe brown manicures courtesy of Deborah Lippman’s Brand New Day.

Mirroring nature by bringing together earthy neutrals and retina-burning brights, there were many elements to riff on. But ultimately the blossoming lip is the easiest—and chicest—way to add a punchy zing of color to your natural glow.
