Meet the Standout Creators From This Year’s #VogueBeautyHalloween Challenge

After Kim Kardashian debatably won the Met gala with her custom Balenciaga black sheath—an ode to anti-glamour on the most glamorous night of the year—the memes poured in: a Balenciaga-shrouded Kim as dementor; a Balenciaga-shrouded Kim as H.R. Giger’s alien queen. And then, of course there was the one trolling Kardashian’s longtime makeup artist, Mario Dedivanovic, who notoriously applied contouring makeup to the reality star and shapewear mogul before she suited up in her feature-obscuring, head-to-toe look. The evocative all-black silhouette—plus long ponytail—was forecasted to be the Halloween costume of the year this past weekend as pandemic-weary partygoers prepared for their first fright fest since COVID-19 vaccines became available earlier this spring, but it was Dedivanovic who perhaps did it best: in honor of #VogueBeautyHalloween, the face painter and brand founder posted a tutorial of himself applying a full face of Kim-inspired makeup, and, just as his lookalike model covers her face with a swathe of black spandex, Dedivanovic can be seen (fake) crying off camera.

It was one of a handful of highlights from the second edition of our annual Halloween makeup challenge, as professional artists from across the country showed up with their scariest, sexiest best—from makeup artist Mimi Choi’s ultra creepy riff on surrealism and Jillian Dempsey’s ode to punk icon Nina Hagen, to hairstylist Chris Appleton’s spot-on recreation of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman. We’re still reeling from Fenty Beauty global artist Priscilla Ono’s La Llorona and Adir Abergel’s next-level Edward Scissorhands, in which Kristen Stewart’s longtime hairstylist appears to actually become Johnny Depp in Tim Burton’s 1990 cult classic.

But it wasn’t just the pros who got in on the action. Makeup artist @domdella transforming Bebe Rexha into Anna Nicole Smith on her wedding day deserves a special call out here, as does @_.tirado._’s terrifying tooth fairy, which is still haunting our dreams many days later.
