Hot tip: If you're on the hunt for new makeup brands to add to your lineup, you don't want to sleep on the Halal beauty world (i.e., makeup that adheres to Islamic law). From shimmery eyeshadows, to lightweight foundations, to long-lasting nail polishes, there are legit so many Halal-certified makeup brands out there to play with, whether you follow the rules of Halal in your daily life already, or you're just looking to support some Halal brands and try new products. Ahead, all the deets on the seven Halal makeup brands you need to check out ASAP.

What is Halal makeup?

Halal—which translates to "permissible" in Arabic—means a product is only formulated, manufactured, and produced with ingredients that are accepted under Islamic law. According to Safia Ghanim, operations manager and senior technical auditor at the ISWA Halal Certification Department, halal makeup products are free of (1) alcohol, (2) animals that are forbidden to Muslims and/or are not slaughtered according to Shariah law, (3) anything that is defined as "najs" (which means "filth" or "unclean," and includes things like pork and blood), and more.

FYI: Just because a brand has Halal-compliant ingredients, it doesn't mean it's automatically Halal-certified. Ghanim explains that in order for a makeup brand to receive legit Halal certification, every step of production and distribution is analyzed to make sure it meets the requirements in full—a process that ends up being pretty lengthy. In general, Ghanim says you can expect all Halal-certified cosmetics to be "clean, pure, hygienic, and healthy" (which, TBH, anyone can benefit from in their makeup or skincare products).
