“We had a ton of fun, and got to release the past few months of pent-up creativity,” says hairstylist Sam McKnight.
Take Your Festival Beauty Cues From Dries Van Noten
For spring/summer 2022, Dries Van Noten commissioned filmmaker Albert Moya and photographer Rafael Pavarotti to capture his festival-inspired collection in moving and still imagery. The result was a riot of color, bold prints, and rich textures, which was essentially the starting point for the hair and makeup.
“When Dries sent me the collection pictures I immediately thought we had to do something with colored hair,” says hairstylist Sam McKnight. “There were so many exquisite prints, we had the idea to actually match the prints onto hair wefts, which Eamonn Hughes and my team painstakingly hand-colored over a few days in our London studio.” What followed was a stunning array of multicolored hairpieces, some finger waved, others silky straight, which McKnight placed amongst the models’ hair.
“We also added a few single-toned pieces to emulate a short hair cut in front or on the sides,” he adds. “There were some mysterious hair veils completely covering the face, too.”
The makeup was just as playful, with makeup artist Lucy Bridge echoing the colors of the collection on models’ eyes and lips in alternating shimmering jewel tones and pops of matte neon. Where on some models she experimented with dotted patterns underneath the eyes, others were simply left fresh-faced, while one model’s face was painted entirely in pink shimmer. This smörgåsbord of pattern, color and texture was also reflected in the nails, courtesy of nail artist Sylvie MacMillan.
“It’s all about the collaboration,” adds McKnight. “We had a ton of fun, and got to release the past few months of pent-up creativity.”
