The Beauty at Schiaparelli Was Suitably Surreal

Daniel Roseberry’s designs were enhanced by elongated gold-plated nails that were out of this world.

Eschewing an IRL runway for a digital format, Schiaparelli’s spring/summer 2022 collection once again took its cues from Elsa Schiaparelli’s love of the surreal. As with Daniel Roseberry’s previous offerings, the stars of this season’s collection were the accessories, with models dripping in gold-plated breast plates and jewel-encrusted body-part pendants. Even the bags were adorned with glittering eyes and whimsical lip features.

This blurring of the borders between human and object continued in the beauty, with models wearing a mixture of the brand’s signature elongated gold-plated nail accessories and painted red lacquer nail extensions, sharpened into a point by nail artist Huberte Cesarion. Elsewhere, cleverly designed hats mimicked the silhouettes of models’ faces, or covered half of them entirely in a very René Magritte way.

Meanwhile, hairstylist Olivier Schawalder fixed models’ hair into low chignons and styled them under turbans, leather caps and surreal-umbrella hats. As for makeup, Erin Parsons opted for a ’90s inflected soft glam, teaming wings of black eyeliner with darker lip liner on photographer Nadia Lee Cohen and a shiny frosted pink finish on the other models.
