There’s a lot to love about this time of year. But if you’re a fellow beauty enthusiast, there’s one obvious highlight: the makeup. Whether you’re meeting loved ones IRL or virtually, the party season is the best excuse to dig up that glitter eyeshadow from your bottom drawer, or unearth the red lipstick you’ve been meaning to wear all year but haven’t. Unsure about what your look for the season should be? We’ve rounded up seven celebrity beauty looks to inspire your makeup choices. You could try…
A frosty aquamarine eye
Y2K trends making a comeback has led to the resurgence of frosty eyeshadow. Priyanka Chopra Jonas recently wore an updated version of the trend where she chose an aquamarine shade of frost-finish eyeshadow and paired it with kohl-rimmed eyes and a warm nude lip. To make sure the colour of your eyeshadow really pops, prep your eyelids with a primer first. You could also apply the powder with a wet brush to make the pigment stronger.
All bronze everything
Let the warm tones of your favourite bronzer inspire your whole look. It’s a shade that looks great on the cheeks, lids, lips, nails… Use a bronzing powder to warm up your cheeks, temples and jawline. Then, with a smaller eyeshadow brush, apply it all over your eyelids too. You could dab a touch of shimmer on top for some extra glitz. Add loads of highlighter on your cheekbones too. Find a matching lip gloss to complement the rest of the makeup. Janhvi Kapoor also added a soft kitten flick to complete the look.
Liner + lip gloss
There’s nothing wrong with keeping it simple, as Shanaya Kapoor’s beauty look proves. If a flick of black liner is your makeup uniform of choice, stick with it. Choose a long-wearing gel that will last the night without rubbing off and paint it on with a thin eyeliner brush. Alternatively, a waterproof liquid formula would also work. To create an exaggerated, doe-eyed effect, just add lashings of mascara on both top and bottom lashes, and a hint of silver eyeliner in the waterline. Finish the look with some shiny lip gloss.
Sparkly pink lids
A wash of bright colour all over the eyelids is the easiest way to create a fun and playful makeup look that doesn’t take ages to execute. And a purply-pink shade like this one Gigi Hadid wore will suit everyone. To add some festive cheer to the look, follow in the steps of Hadid and press some loose gold glitter in the inner corners of the eyes as well as on the centre of the lids. Pro tip: if you get any glitter fallout on your face, just use a strip of adhesive tape to gently lift the particles from the surface of the skin.
A rich, oxblood lip
Nothing screams the holidays like a dark red lip. And it’s best paired with a natural-looking, luminous base, as Yami Gautam demonstrates. You can DIY this by mixing a drop of liquid highlighter with your foundation and buffing it into your skin with a damp sponge. For the lip, make sure you exfoliate with a lip scrub first to get rid of dry patches and create a smooth base for lipstick. Then, line your lips with a lip liner to sketch the shape and colour inside the lines before going over it with a coat of lipstick. Blot and repeat.
Glossy skin and lids
There’s a place for a barely-there makeup look, even during the holidays. Ananya Panday offers inspiration for a glitzier version of no-makeup-makeup that’s even appropriate for party season. The key to making it extraordinary? Replace shimmer with sheen. A high-shine transparent gloss can be just as impactful as a bright glitter eyeshadow. Once your base is ready, use an eye gloss all over the lids and sweep a clear illuminating balm along the high points of your face for a glossy effect. Complete the look with some lip gloss.
Graphic liner
Ready to get technical? A graphic liner look may not be a five-minute makeup job, but if you take the time to get it right, it’ll be sure to grab some eyeballs. Let Ariana Grande’s black liner look serve as inspiration. Use a very thin eyeliner brush to get a precise application and keep some cotton buds handy to clean up any mistakes. You could also set the eyeliner with a black powder eyeshadow to keep it from fading, especially in the crease of the eye. Grande’s watermelon lip and matte skin perfectly balanced the eye look.
