Selena Gomez on going-out makeup, her drugstore trick for battling breakouts, and why she’s not done with being blonde just yet.
Watch Selena Gomez Do Her Going-Out Makeup Routine, From Liquid Liner to Lip Gloss
Selena Gomez is back. On set for her second Vogue Beauty Secrets video, the 29-year-old superstar, who can be seen alongside Steve Martin in the new Hulu comedy series Only Murders in the Building, is setting the stage for her getting-ready routine with a scented candle and a drop of a calming patchouli essential oil dotted onto her wrists. “It gets me in the mood,” she explains, as she caters to her complexion with cucumber eye patches and a resurfacing serum from Tatcha.
“The older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve realized that less is more and that it makes me feel sexier when I don’t have as much makeup on,” says Gomez. Nevertheless, the Rare Beauty founder has plans this evening—and an amped-up above-the-neck equation, achieved with a handful of products from her very own line, is in order. “When I go out, this is the time when I can try new things. I can use my eyeliner, my colors, sparkles… It’s just fun to add a little bit of that,” she continues, reaching for a brow-defining powder, an eye-popping rose-hued liquid shadow, and an inky liner, which she uses to achieve her signature feline flick. Of course, as she puts it, no statement look is complete without a generous swipe of mascara.
Even Gomez, however, is not immune to the occasional makeup mistake: At the 2018 Met Gala—moments before which she’d tried out a new self-tanner—“I look at a photo of myself, and I’m completely orange,” she recalls, breaking into a laugh. “My first reaction was just to get the hell out of there!” Now, she employs a very light hand when sweeping on a coat of bronzer, which lends her sun-sensitive skin (a side effect, she notes, of lupus) a golden touch. A liquid luminizer (in her go-to shade, Mesmerize) and a mauve-colored lip gloss add a radiant finishing touch. “Alright, guys, that is my look for the night,” she says, after spritzing on a setting mist. “I will see you guys for the next Beauty Secrets.” In other words? Stay tuned.
