Stretch with scarves, shadowbox with bangles, or lift some horse-shaped dumbbells.
Work Out With Hermès This Weekend in Brooklyn
Should you be lucky enough to own anything from Hermès, chances are you don’t wear it to the gym. That said, this weekend in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Hermès is challenging that perception with a new activation called HermèsFit. Visitors can do yoga with silk scarves provided by Hermès, stretch with their belts, and shadowbox with bracelets—or just browse the first-floor, bright orange installation, complete with a boxing ring and hanging bags, horse-shaped dumbbells, and an orange-and-brown chest-press station.
I signed up for shadowboxing with bracelets and, after putting my belongings in an orange locker, selected three enamel bangles from a tray provided at the beginning of the class. Hermès products were placed in a well-lit display at the back of the class (all the better to ogle them through the mirror at the front of the studio space). The 20-minute session was taught by an instructor dressed in head-to-toe orange, down to her leg warmers. Truth be told, I went in thinking the purpose of the bracelets was to add a little bit of weight to my arms, but instead our instructor encouraged us to think elegantly, not aggressively, and to feel and enjoy the sensation of the bracelets on our arms as we moved through our jabs, crosses, and kicks. Was it the most rigorous class of my life? No. Did I get my heart rate up and feel excruciatingly glamorous? Yes.
Downstairs, I could really throw a punch after being helped into a pristine pair of white boxing gloves by an assistant (also, as you may have gathered, dressed in orange). After taking a few whacks at a hanging boxing bag decorated with one of Hermès’s scarf prints, I climbed into the boxing ring for a photo. Rocky who?
The pop-up—the label’s first in Brooklyn—is open at 60 North Sixth Street from November 4 through 7, with classes every hour on the hour from 11 p.m. to 6 p.m. (You can reserve a spot on Hermes’ website.) At 6 p.m., the boxing ring becomes a stage. Last night, it kicked off with a performance from musician Moses Sumney. After working up a sweat, you can of course buy the Hermès shoes, scarves, and jewelry placed around the store to keep those endorphins going (and accessorize for your next trip to the gym).
