9 Vogue Staffers Reveal Which Shorts They Love to Wear

From gingham to floral prints, these shorts are at the top of our list.

Out of all the summer staples, stylish shorts for women are one of the trickiest items to shop. Not only is there that old debate on their age-appropriateness, but there’s a fine line between casually cool All-American shorts and barely-there Daisy Dukes. Plus, whether it’s a pair of cut-offs, Bermudas, or biker shorts, finding an option that fits properly and looks polished is a particularly challenging task. So this summer, we decided to take a survey around the office to investigate and discover the absolute best shorts, according to Vogue editors.

Some of my colleagues admitted that shorts are a hard no for them—no matter how hot the weather gets. While others used to feel that way, but are recent converts, who can’t resist some of the beautiful designs popping up at stores. Each editor has a very distinctive sense of style, but all of the leg-baring designs they rely on when it’s scorching hot outside are undeniably chic. From tailored shorts that redefine business casual to picnic-worthy prints that come equipped with matching crop tops, here are the most stylish shorts for women, according to Vogue editors.

I’m one of the few people who actually really enjoys the long shorts silhouette. (I hope brands never stop making them!!!) I have pairs in leather, denim, crepe, linen, you name it! Despite still being “shorts,” the longer length makes them feel a little more elevated and a little less casual, and all the while still possess the benefits of wearing cut-offs in the warm summer months. I’ve worn them everywhere, from neighborhood strolls, wedding ceremonies, to the office. Plus, they don’t have an expiration date come the fall. This season, I’m looking forward to giving the board shorts version a try for a sportier spin on the style.

Last month, I found myself near Columbus Circle with time to spare and popped into the Nordstrom store. I haven’t bought any clothes in a physical retail store since the pandemic started, so it was a real “experience!” They had a charming Rag & Bone deli installation set up in the middle of the store, and I bought a pair of high-waisted denim shorts. I’m not sure what came over me as I rarely wear shorts, but I figure they would be great to have come summertime!

Up until a couple of weeks ago, I had a firm no-shorts policy—in them, I just never felt very put together. Recently while vintage shopping, I came across a gingham tunic and high-waisted short set that felt very 1940s playsuit. I’m thinking it’s the coordinating separates (rather than a one-off gingham short) that provides the polish I’m looking for. Suffice to say, I’ve reconsidered my no-shorts rule. Below, a remarkably similar option from Zara!

I love sharp suiting, and I get my fix in the summer with shorts that have a tailored finish. This pair looks good with just about any top, but I love elevating the comfortable, breezy style with a crisp, cotton blouse.

I’m not traditionally a shorts person, but I have been circling around this poppy pair from La DoubleJ. I’m just waiting for the forecast to rise for me to add to cart. The print instantly transports me to a summer spritz on the Italian coast (even if I’ll be in my garden instead), and I plan to wear them with simple white tees, breezy linen button-ups, gold layered jewelry, and a sun-kissed skin tone.

As soon as temperatures rise in the city, I pull out all of my favorite bike shorts for the summer. They’re the perfect wardrobe staple for staying cool, comfortable, and chic in the heat. My go-to pairs are usually Old Navy’s compression shorts (I have them in nearly every color!) or this fun animal-printed style from Amazon.

I think I have a slight obsession with these shorts; I haven’t been able to stop wearing them. The gender-neutral brand ONE DNA has my heart and repackaged it back to me as these short, striped sleeper shorts perfect for a calm girl summer.
