The seasoned actor talks about turning 50 and the products she swears by.
Annabeth Gish Drops Her Skin-Care Routine
Annabeth Gish turned 50 in March, and refreshingly, she’s honest about the start of a new decade. “Aging is a roller coaster of a ride! Turning 50 was a gasp-able moment, but then it all gets easier,” she says before adding, “I think.”
Acknowledging that going from her 40s to her 50s was “scary,” Gish—who rose to fame in her teens and played Yale-bound waitress Kat Arujo in classic ’80s movie Mystic Pizza alongside Julia Roberts and Lili Taylor—says that number means something entirely different in 2021. “It’s empowering,” she tells Glamour. “It’s different than when my mom was 50. It’s a real opportunity to step into one’s own sense of self, because if we feel good in our skin, then we radiate that.” It’s fantastic advice, but Gish doesn’t want to sound too much like a stereotypical greeting card, so she adds: “But catch me at the right time, because in 10 minutes that mindset could change.”
Humor aside, Gish is working more than ever and loving the roles coming her way, From The Haunting of Hill House to the upcoming Midnight Mass. Gish can next be seen in Lifetime’s original film Gone Mom (premiering Saturday, June 5, at 8 p.m., 7 Central), based on a true story and the first in the network’s Summer of Secrets slate.
“I was immediately compelled by the resonance,” Gish says of playing Jennifer Dulos, a wealthy Connecticut mother-of-five who mysteriously disappeared after dropping her kids off at school. “Jennifer was 50; I’m 50. She had children; I’m also a mother. It was very important to me to present this story of a woman of privilege who fell [victim] to mad love gone awry. It can happen to anyone of any socioeconomic status.”
Gish says she typically doesn’t like watching anything that she’s in, but this time was different. “It affected me emotionally. It’s not just a ripped-from-the-headlines story; it’s a real, authentic piece that hopefully honors Jennifer Dulos.”
Given the rigors of filming during a pandemic—and the heavy subject material—Gish has mastered the art of a self-care routine that focuses on getting enough sleep and using natural products that target her skin-care needs. “I’m typically a minimalist because too much stuff is just rigorous for me, but as I’m aging, I do have a few things that are definitely on my bedside table.”
From a cult-favorite essence to an emu-oil eye cream, Gish invited us into her home (well, through Zoom, that is) to reveal her tried-and-true must-haves that really do the trick. Time for another edition of Drop the Routine.
My CleanserI use Nyakio’s Sweet Almond Cleansing Oil Balm. It’s just the most gentle, lovely, cleansing balm. I use it every night.

$225Violet Grey My SerumsVintner’s Daughter Botanical Serum is a staple by my bed. I have it everywhere, even in the car. I think that’s the most expensive product I use, but I do believe in it, truly. My makeup artist on Gone Mom also turned me onto iS Clinical’s Active Serum, and that’s amazing.

$138Dermstore My Face Oil and Day CreamWhen I was a teenager, I would never have put any oils on my skin; now they’re imperative. One of the products I use religiously is from AbOvo Skincare, which was shared with me by a makeup artist, Tina Roesler Kerwin, and it containes emu oil. It’s very, very luscious.
My MoisturizerI do like La Mer’s moisturizing cream. It really works.

$190Sephora My Eye CreamAgain, AbOvo. That’s my favorite eye cream because it has emu oil in it, and I love it. As I’m aging I find that my skin is dry, so between drinking a shit ton of water and putting on these oils at night, it helps.
My SunscreenI use EltaMD 40 tinted sunscreen everyday. I am adamant about it. There’s skin cancer on both sides of our family, so my kids know all about SPF. I’ll share this tip: I did a movie 19 years ago called Knots with Paulina Porizkova. One of the best things she ever said to me then was, “Make sure to put sunscreen on your eyelids.” I’ve never stopped doing that ever since.

$33Dermstore My Lip BalmI like the Rosebud Salve. If I have something in my purse, it’s that.

$7Sephora My DeviceI have a NuFace, this little microcurrent device that I use when I’m watching TV for about 20 minutes. It tightens up your cheeks, and you can do it around your eyes. I’ve definitely noticed a difference. And my husband too. The next day he’ll say, “That works!” It’s interesting. [Laughs.]
