Armie Hammer Just Condemned the ‘Vicious Online Attacks’ Against Him

And he's dropped out of a movie with Jennifer Lopez.

Armie Hammer is currently in the middle of a social media firestorm after unverified screenshots, which could be fakes, claim to show him talking about sexual fetishes and cannibalism. Hammer released a statement on January 13 amid the controversy and confirmed he's dropping out of his next movie, Shotgun Wedding.

“I’m not responding to these bullshit claims, but in light of the vicious and spurious online attacks against me, I cannot in good conscience now leave my children for four months to shoot a film in the Dominican Republic," the statement reads. “Lionsgate is supporting me in this and I’m grateful to them for that."

In Shotgun Wedding, Hammer was set to play a man who embarks on a destination wedding with his fiancée, played by Jennifer Lopez, and their families. But the romantic affair is hijacked by criminals, and the couple reignites their love while trying to save everyone's lives. Production was set to begin immediately in the Dominican Republic, but Lionsgate will recast Hammer's role in light of his decision to step back from the film. A rep for the movie's production said, “Armie has requested to step away from the film and we support him in his decision," per Variety

Hammer is also set to star in a sequel to the Academy Award-winning winning romantic drama, Call Me By Your Name, in which he'll reprise his role as Oliver and appear alongside Timothée Chalamet. The release date for the sequel is unknown, and production has been put on hold because of the coronavirus pandemic. “Before coronavirus, I made a trip to the United States to meet a screenwriter I love very much, whose name I don’t want to say, to talk about the second part. Unfortunately, we had to put it on hold,” CMBYN director Luca Guadagnino said in an interview with Italian newspaper, La Repubblica.

Guadagnino continued, “Of course, it was a great pleasure to work with Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Esther Garrel, and the other actors. Everyone will be in the new movie.”
