Behind Megan Thee Stallion’s Stunning Old Hollywood Met Look
Megan Thee Stallion has long ago proven she can pull off risqué stage looks and full-on red carpet glamour. She often appears at awards shows in slip dresses and golden-era gowns, so why not stick to the classics for her first Met gala? The rapper opted for a classic ensemble, but in the most MTS way. “My inspiration was Old Hollywood, with a hot girl twist,” she told Vogue.
That was certainly the result. The rapper wore a custom evening dress by Coach, covered with megawatt crystals (all applied by hand!). “The dress I designed for Meg is romantic, crafted of silk georgette and cascading ruffled tulle—but there’s an attitude that comes through in the volume and embellishments,” Coach creative director Stuart Vevers told Vogue. “The crystal embroidery was crafted by hand in our Coach workshop in New York City. The dress was inspired by a vintage slip dress—the silk was hand-dyed and washed to give it a soft, nostalgic effect.” On her arm was a tiny bag, also by Coach. “Classic lines, silhouettes, and hues coupled with the attitude and style from the golden era,” Megan explained, later adding, “I think what is great about American fashion designers is the appreciation of the working woman. So clothing is not only glamorous and fashionable, it is functional.”
Of course, since it was Megan’s first Met gala, the experience was quite a touching one. “I feel really, really beautiful and glamorous. I cried a little bit,” she said. “I think my favorite detail of the dress is the ruffles along the side.” Ours too.
