A literally risky styling moment.

The best outfits involve an element of risk. Today in Paris, Bella Hadid walked out in a standard Bella Hadid look which proved our theory. She wore a slouchy brown pinstripe suit with a cropped striped turtleneck that gave her the standard ab reveal. But neither the suit nor the shrunken turtleneck were necessarily the standout part of the outfit. Instead, it was Hadid’s open glass of coffee, carried without a lid, that was the head-turner. Unlike a thermos or a paper cup from Starbucks that feels very “commuting to my 9-5!”, the concept of carrying a glass out in the open feels extra, over-the-top, and slightly glam. (Imagine that potential to spill.) Toting along a lidless beverage says, “I’m so balanced that not even a droplet will touch me. I also have someone who will probably take it from me when I’m finished.” Both of those facts are most likely true of Hadid, too.

The look recalls Rihanna, who has long been elegantly and effortlessly strutting along with a rotation of wine glasses. There was also Ezra Miller, who attended the Dior Homme pre-fall 2018 show in a floral print suit with a pen-meets-glass-of-wine contraption that he drank from. How balanced! How chic! On the other hand, Hadid’s daytime coffee version of open-glass-of-wine means business and not necessarily leisure, but still connotes an air of undeniable poise. An accessory with just the right amount of jolt.
