Bill Murray, His Wacky Shirt, and Martini Glass Stole the Show at the Golden Globes

A suit and tie? So tired. A psychedelic button-up? So fresh!

At tonight’s Golden Globes, all fashion bets were off. Prior to the show, some stars walked a physical red carpet in traditional glamorous gowns and suits; others dressed up at home and had a little more fun with their non-traditional evening looks. (Have you seen Dan Levy’s zesty yellow Valentino suit?). The consensus seemed to be that, given that it was not at all business as usual, it was time to have some sartorial fun.

As for who totally stole the show by dressing down? It was actor Bill Murray, nominated for best supporting actor in a motion picture for his role in On The Rocks. Appearing just for a handful of seconds via Zoom, Murray appeared donned a wild, printed button-up shirt—the kind you see on a tropical vacation, paired with a fanny pack. Combined with his picturesque skyline backdrop, and his frosted martini in hand, it was the ultimate rule-breaking look that screamed, ‘who needs a tux?’

As a Hollywood icon, Murray has certainly earned his right to wear what he wants, when he wants. (Fellow legend Jeff Daniels also rejected formality and chose a flannel shirt instead.) And while the night had plenty of well-dressed men in spiffy suits that were appropriate for an awards ceremony, there was something totally refreshing about Murray, his shirt, and his martini. Cheers!
