"You deserve this."
Billie Eilish Dedicated Her Record of the Year Grammy to Megan Thee Stallion
Billie Eilish took home the Record of the Year Grammy for “Everything I Wanted"—and in her speech she spotlighted Megan Thee Stallion, who she says should've won the award.
“This is really embarrassing for me," Eilish said. "Megan, girl, I was gonna write a speech about how you deserve this, but then I was like, ‘There’s no way they’re gonna choose me.’ I was like, ‘It’s hers.’ You deserve this. You had a year that I think is un-toppable. You are a queen. I want to cry thinking about how much I love you. You’re so beautiful. You’re so talented. You deserve everything in the world. I think about you constantly. I root for you always. You deserve this, honestly. Genuinely. This goes to her. Can we just cheer for Megan Thee Stallion?”
The 19-year-old then added, “But thank you, also. I really do appreciate this. Thank you to the Academy. Thank you to Ringo [Starr, who presented the award]. I love you. I love my team. Thank you for seeing me. Thank you to my brother, Finneas. Thanks for doing this. I love you. Thank you.”
Responses to Eilish's speech were mixed, with many drawing comparisons to when Adele swept the 2017 Grammys but shouted out Beyoncé's Lemonade.
“Macklemore, Adele, and Billie Eilish have all done the ‘I won but a Black artist deserved this’ speech and even when they right, it’s embarrassing for everyone involved,” one person tweeted.
“Billie and Adele accepted them trophies saying they ain’t deserve it, but ain’t giving em up,” someone else added.
