Chrissy Teigen Explains Her Decision to Get Sober Four Weeks Ago

"I was done with making an ass of myself."

Update: December 31, 2020 — Chrissy Teigen just shared the real reason she decided to quit drinking after revealing to a fan that she's “four weeks sober” earlier this week.

Taking to Instagram Stories on December 31, the Cravings cookbook author posted a photo of the book that inspired her to change her life: Holly Whitaker's Quit Like a Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed with Alcohol.

"One month ago, on my birthday, I got this book from my doctor and friend," Teigen explained. "I was done with making an ass of myself in front of people (I'm still embarrassed), tired of day drinking and feeling like shit by 6, not being able to sleep."

“I have been sober ever since,” she added.

Original Story: December 29, 2020 — Chrissy Teigen revealed she's four weeks sober nearly three years after opening up about her struggles with alcohol.

The revelation happened when the Cravings cookbook author shared a video of herself dancing in a one-piece bathing suit as she and her family vacation in St. Barts. In the video from December 29, Teigen sings Debbie Reynolds' iconic song "Good Morning" from the musical Singing in the Rain.

The Instagram clip garnered tons of reactions from fans, who praised Teigen's silly vibes. One person even jokingly commented, "I need whatever drugs you’re on!!” To that, the mom of two candidly replied that she is actually "4 weeks sober."

Though it's unclear what led to Teigen's decision to get sober, her followers responded with messages of support. “You’re an amazing person,” one fan wrote in the comments, while another added: “Congratulations, you have been through a lot lately, I am glad that you are feeling better.”

However, after some responders lashed out at the original joke, Teigen commented again, writing, “please stop fighting in my comments.”

Chrissy Teigen also subtly mentioned her sobriety via Instagram on Christmas Eve, writing, "merry x mas eve! trying to figure out if my love of face crystals is a phase of sobriety or a lifestyle” alongside a festive video of her and daughter Luna.

Teigen first got candid her alcohol consumption in a 2017 interview with Cosmopolitan, admitting she was “point blank, just drinking too much."

She explained, “I got used to being in hair and makeup and having a glass of wine. Then that glass of wine would carry over into me having one before the awards show. And then a bunch at the awards show."

However, Teigen soon started to feel bad her drinking habits, which included “making kind of an ass of myself to people." She added, "That feeling, there's just nothing like that. You feel horrible. It's not a good look for me, for John, for anybody."

Teigen also shared that alcohol abuse runs in her family and it's what led her to believe that she was simply the type of person who "can't just have one drink."

"Nobody really brought it up to me," she continued. “They just assumed that it was OK because I always felt OK the next morning. I knew in my heart it wasn't right.”

At the time, Teigen also made a commitment to “fix herself" by taking a break from alcohol. Then in 2019, she vowed to quit drinking for a little while after a boozy night at the Oscars.

"Oh my god I feel like absolute shit," she tweeted. “I hereby go sober for at least the week. Booze is poison."
