Cody Simpson Describes Dating Miley Cyrus as a ‘Phase’ In New Interview

“Everything ended fairly amicably,” he said of the breakup.

The roller coaster that is Miley Cyrus's romantic life roars on. In August 2020, the singer confirmed that she and her boyfriend of roughly 10 months, Cody Simpson, have split up.

Rumors of a romance between them started swirling on October 8, 2019, when Cyrus posted a selfie to Instagram from a hospital bed (she was being treated for tonsillitis) in which she explicitly calls Simpson her boyfriend. “BF coming to visit me at the hospy,” she wrote, before sharing several pics and videos of Simpson cuddling with her and playing the guitar.

So how did we get from there to here? Let’s take a look back at how their relationship formed (and ended):

February 2012: Cody Simpson and Miley Cyrus go way back—they’ve been friends for a while and have both run in the same circles from time to time. But it seems Simpson had a crush on Cyrus that dates back even further. People surfaced an old video in which Simpson says Cyrus was “his childhood celebrity crush” and confessed that he “knew all the words to her songs, I’m not gonna lie—I’m not ashamed about it at all.”

December 2015: Over the years Simpson and Cyrus have struck up a pretty close-knit friendship. In 2015 Simpson talks about how tight they are, telling GQ Australia, “Miley is one of my best friends and she helps with some of that transitional stuff—trying to escape your childhood. She’s super open-minded, and I’m working on becoming more like that.”

October 2019: The romance begins. The friends turned maybe couple are spotted grabbing acai bowls together in Los Angeles, and insiders report they even kissed. Cyrus addresses the rumors on her Instagram Story and writes about the gendered way in which women have to respond to speculation about who they’re dating.

“I am grown now and make choices as an adult knowing the truth/details/reality,” she writes. “People only ‘know’ what they see on the internet,” adding: “Men (especially successful ones) are RARELY slut-shamed. They move on from one beautiful young woman to the next MOST times without consequence. They are usually referenced as ‘legends,’ ‘heart throbs,’ ‘G,’ ‘Ladies Man’ etc..... where women are called sluts/whores! I am trying to just THRIVE/survive in a ‘mans’ world.... If we can’t beat em, join em! If our president can ‘grab em by the p***y...’ Can’t I just have a kiss and açaí bowl?!?!"

Simpson then shares a black-and-white photo that shows him giving Cyrus a kiss on the cheek and writes, “Pre swim breakfast courtesy of baby.”

On October 4, a source tells Entertainment Tonight that the two were just hoping to have a good time together. “Miley and Cody have been friends for years. They have hooked up in the past,” the source told the show. “Cody and Miley have no plans to start dating each other exclusively. They both just want to have fun and are open and honest with each other about that.”

A few days later, on October 8, Cyrus ends up hospitalized because of tonsillitis. She shares a ton of footage on her Instagram Stories that confirms she and Simpson are dating. She first shares a selfie that says her “BF” was coming to visit, and then documents that he arrived roses in hand, cuddled with her, and played tons of music for her on his guitar.

Even Justin Bieber seems to approve of the new relationship. On Wednesday, October 9, the newlywed singer leaves a comment on a shirtless picture Simpson posted of himself and jokes, “Ur body is a wonderland.” Later, Bieber follows up with “Double date?”—an indication that we could see Simpson, Cyrus, and the Biebers out and about one day. Simpson seems into the idea; he responded with “text me.’

In an apparent (and subtle) response to breakup rumors, on November 20, Simpson posts a photo (per Yahoo!) of his phone’s wallpaper on Instagram Stories that shows an adorable childhood image of a young Cyrus.

January 11, 2020: Cyrus shows Simpson love on his 23rd birthday with a tribute on her Instagram Story.

The couple couldn’t be together on his special day because Simpson is out of town in Milan, but Cyrus makes sure to celebrate with two separate birthday messages.

“Happy birthday to my best friend in the entire world @codysimpson,” she writes on January 10, ahead of his 23rd birthday. “I love you and our pirate life!” she captions an intimate picture of Simpson’s face peeking out from between her legs.

The following day the singer shares a second tribute, along with a goofy video of them slow-dancing to music while wearing matching face masks.

“Happy birthday to my favorite human to get weird with on the entire earth @codysimpson I [heart] u,” she writes.

According to People, Cyrus gave her beau a doctor’s bag from the 1800s embroidered with “Prince Neptune,” as a reference to Simpson’s book.

April 3, 2020: Simpson decides to get a buzz cut...courtesy of his girl, Cyrus.

Simpson has moved to the haircut phase of self-quarantine: On April 2 he posts an Instagram with a full head of hair, asking fans whether he should “buzz it?”

I guess enough of his followers were into the idea. Not even a full 24 hours later, he posted a video of Cyrus shaving off most of his blond hair. That’s called trust.

August 2020: After rumors circulate of a breakup, Cyrus confirms the news during an Instagram Live.

“A year ago, almost to this exact date, the media tried to tell my story for me and control my narrative, and I'm just not accepting that,” she says, per E! News. "So today it came out that me and my boyfriend have broken up. It was confirmed by a 'reliable source,' even though no one is reliable in a relationship except the two individuals that are participating in it."

"But, for right now, two halves can't make a whole and we're individually just working on ourselves to become the people that we wanna be," Cyrus continued. "Like everybody else at this age, we're just deciding who we wanna be with our lives, what we wanna do with our lives. And so don't make it some drama story if next week we're out hanging out or getting pizza. We've been friends for 10 years and we're gonna continue to be friends. Just don't make it something that it is not. And with that being said, I'm done with the bullshit."

May 2021: Simpson opened up about their relationship and breakup in a rare interview. "We went from kind of being good friends and just having a lot of the same friends to being together for a while," he said on 60 Minutes Australia, adding of the breakup, "Everything ended fairly amicably. It was just one of those phases I guess you go through and you learn a lot from it."
