Cynthia Nixon Had a Life-Size 'Bernie Mittens' Cutout Behind Her at the Golden Globes
Cynthia Nixon was nominated at the 2021 Golden Globes on Sunday, February 28 for best supporting actress for her role in Ratched. And like most celebrities this year, she watched the awards show from home. One difference: She had an interesting guest with her—a life-size cutout of the Bernie Sanders “mittens” meme.
You know the one I'm talking about. During the 2021 presidential inauguration, Sanders went absolutely viral for wearing a pair of cozy mittens everyone decided had major grandpa vibes. Sanders put the sudden internet fame to good use, selling merch with all the proceeds going to charity. It's been a whole month since then, but the “Bernie mittens” phenomenon lives on. Nixon's cardboard cutout is proof.
“Watching at home #GoldenGlobes2021,” Nixon captioned a photo on Instagram, the Sanders cutout gloriously placed right behind her. The internet tosses the word iconic around a lot, but this is actually iconic.
“I was just sitting there trying to keep warm, trying to pay attention to what was going on,” Sanders said about the meme on Late Night With Seth Meyers. “What was really nice is the woman who made the mittens lives in Essex Junction, Vermont, she is a schoolteacher and a very, very nice person. She has been somewhat overwhelmed by the kind of attention that is being shown to her mittens.”
I wonder what Bernie Sanders with Mittens will think about the Sex and the City revival coming to HBO Max. That's Cynthia Nixon's next project, and she'll be joined alongside Sarah Jessica Parker and Kristin Davis. Unfortunately, Kim Cattrall won't be returning, but I have a suggestion for who could be the fourth member of Sex and the City 2.0. I'll just leave this post, from Sarah Jessica Parker herself, here:
