Dakota Johnson’s Latest Look Shows the Other Side of Gucci

The actress wore a logo-covered transparent corset top to the premiere of her latest film, The Lost Daughter.

Dakota Johnson loves her Gucci. The actress’ bohemian vibe meshes well with Alessandro Michele’s eclecticism, and since the start of his tenure at the Italian luxury house, Johnson has enthusiastically embraced his designs. Still, the fact that large portions of her wardrobe come from the same brand hasn’t stopped Johnson from keeping her red carpet style interesting. Last night at the New York Film Festival premiere of her latest film, The Lost Daughter, Johnson arrived in an unexpected piece from Gucci’s Aria collection. Her transparent, logo-covered corset top was sexy, slinky, and the opposite of what we’ve come to expect from her (and Michele).

Johnson’s corset and leather pants felt fresh—the kind of daring, rockstar-worthy combination that would seem right at home on Rihanna or Dua Lipa . Tom Ford’s Gucci era is noted for its focus on sexiness, but Michele has an irreverent take on the subject. His version of sexy involves a little cheekiness. Johnson’s top, much like the pasty dress worn by Dear Evan Hansen star Amanda Stenberg last week, offered a strategic display of skin while retaining the playfulness his work is celebrated for.

Paired with black leather pants, a pair of sky-high Gianvito Rossi heels, and a diamond Cartier necklace, the final look, styled by Kate Young, provided an alternate view on Johnson’s style. Typically, Johnson’s outfits allude to the past via vintage-inspired silhouettes or boho embellishments. By contrast, her sleek, head-to-toe black Gucci outfit was rooted in the now. While it makes sense that the star of 50 Shades of Grey has mastered boudoir dressing, her uncharacteristically sexy red carpet moment was still a welcome surprise.
