She clearly has a go-to designer for special occasions.
Dr. Jill Biden Wears One of Her Favorite Designers to Meet the Pope
When you’re first lady of the United States, it helps to have a few fail-safe silhouettes and designers to fall back on for special occasions (I’m assuming here, as I’ve never been the FLOTUS before). Former first lady Michelle Obama favored colorful cardigans and arm-baring dresses, for instance. Though it’s early in her tenure as first lady , Dr. Biden seems to live by the axiom, “when in doubt, reach for an Adam Lippes suit.”
Today for a meeting with the Pope at the Vatican, Dr. Biden reached for a demure navy sheath dress and blazer from Lippes, made of a textured fabric that offered some visual interest. She paired the outfit with navy suede heels by Marion Parke and, as is customary, a black lace veil from Gigi Burris. Her husband, President Joe Biden, wore a dark blue suit and tie.
Dr. Biden’s ensemble was the same silhouette that she wore to meet with Queen Elizabeth II. Back in June, she wore a powder blue suit with the same slim-fitting, just-below-the-knee skirt and single-button blazer, also by Adam Lippes. As she was meeting the Queen for tea, the pastel color palette was perfectly appropriate; she and the monarch, who wore pink, would have looked right at home in an Easter basket. That event cemented Lippes, an independent American designer known for feminine, sophisticated womenswear, as one of her favorites. She had previously worn the designer’s clothes for a flight on Air Force 1, and for an Equal Pay Day ceremony. Here, FLOTUS is tacitly giving some excellent fashion advice: when you find a silhouette that works for you, wear it time and time again.
