In the video for her latest track “We’re Good,” the pop star pays unexpected tribute to a film classic.
Dua Lipa’s New Video Brings Flapper Style to the Titanic
Since releasing her sophomore album Future Nostalgia to chart-topping sales last March, Dua Lipa has barely paused to take her foot off the gas. Whether it was the follow-up remix album Club Future Nostalgia, featuring cameos from Madonna and Missy Elliott, or the thrilling Studio 2054 livestream concert that debuted in November to a record-breaking audience of 5 million people, Lipa has been keeping her fans almost as busy as she is.
To cap off her bumper year in the spotlight, Lipa released a deluxe edition of the record yesterday featuring a number of new and unheard tracks. The first, “We’re Good,” dropped early this morning. It isn’t just the song’s gentle groove and seductive vocals that turned heads, though, but also the lavish video which features Lipa as a cabaret singer onboard a classic cruise liner—with all the flapper-inspired fashions to match.
Beginning in a spangly, vintage Prada gown lavishly decorated with crystals of all shapes and sizes, Lipa channels the 1920s spirit further with a pair of white silk gloves and oversize vintage jewelry. (A contemporary twist comes courtesy of a pair of vertiginous Marc Jacobs gogo boots.) Next, she switches into a green drop-waist gown with a billowing skirt and perfectly matching emerald earrings and bracelets—another Prada number that was, very appropriately, initially designed for Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby. Lastly, Lipa slips into a vintage Miu Miu gown covered in sequins paired with a vampy up-do and green silk gloves for a final, delightfully decadent moment.
But the real surprise? As the video reaches its conclusion, the ship starts to sink and is quickly abandoned, leading to an unlikely homage to Titanic that even features Lipa aboard a lifeboat with the cruise liner sinking in the background. Oh yes, she goes there.
