‘Emily in Paris’ Star Lily Collins Celebrates First Week of Filming Season 2 With New Pic

Emily, Mindy, and Camille look amazing!

J'ai de bonnes nouvelles pour toi! In other words: I have some good news for you, Emily in Paris fans. After getting a renewal order back in November, the much talked-about rom-com series starring Lily Collins, Lucas Bravo, and Ashley Park is now filming its second season!

In an exclusive statement to Glamour, creator Darren Star said, “I am thrilled to be returning to Paris for a second season to continue Emily’s adventures in the magical ‘City of Light.’”

The series premiered on October 2, 2020, and immediately became a viral hit. Whether you loved it, hated it, or hated it so much you loved it, the series about a 20-something American who moves to Paris to become an influencer handle social media at a luxury marketing firm certainly struck a nerve. But for all the think pieces about whether the series was too over-the-top or whether Emily deserved her job, one thing was certain: An escapist series set in Paris couldn't have arrived at a better time.

In a press statement released in May 2021, Netflix revealed that Emily in Paris had been viewed by an astonishing 58 million households during its first 28 days, making it the platform's most popular comedy series of 2020. Guess there really is no such thing as bad press. Emily herself could not have designed a better marketing campaign than a glitzy show everyone just had to have a take on.

The 10-episode series supplied us with stunning views of Paris, introduced a new TV boyfriend, Lucas Bravo, to the internet, and made everyone obsessed with Ashley Park—not to mention French icons Phillippine Leroy Beauleiu (“Sylvie”), Samuel Arnold (“Julien”), Bruno Gouery (“Luc”), Camille Razat (“Camille”), and more.

Netflix announced the renewal via a tongue-in-cheek letter from Emily's French boss, Sylvie Grateau, to her American boss, Madeline Wheeler (played by Kate Walsh).  Read it for yourself, below:

In late October 2020, French president Emmanuel Macron announced a second national lockdown until at least the end of November. When Glamour spoke with Star in October, he said he hoped to be filming in Paris by spring 2021.

“I hope we'll be in a better place by then,” he said. Star also revealed he'd like to explore more of France and other parts of Europe. “If we can get to Italy, I'd love that. It’s just about where the stories take us,” he said. “The scenery comes second.”

As of early October 2020, Star hadn't planned out too much story for the second season. “Writers are inspired by deadlines and reality,” he said with a laugh. “There are definitely storylines that have been in my head that I’d love to explore, [like] more of Emily's work family, especially Sylvie.”

Well, it sounds like the winter months were good for script writing, because just as he'd hoped, Star was able to start shooting in the spring: Season two went into production on May 3, as announced in another Savoir letter:

Said Collins at the time, “As an actor, an artist, and a creative, the most meaningful gift is to connect with people through your art in some way. It’s an honor to be associated with a project that provided people with some much-needed relief during a trying time when everyone was looking for a reason to smile and laugh. Not only did playing Emily teach me more about myself, but also about the world around me. I couldn’t be happier to be back in Paris for Season 2 to expand upon those lessons, to continue to grow, and learn even more about this beautiful city and all of its character with Emily.”

On May 8, Collins marked the first week of filming with a selfie with Park and Razat. “The girls are back. Reunited and it feels so good!” she wrote in the caption of the photo taken in St. Tropez.

“Mon cœur ♥️🎬,” Park captioned her own post, along with even more behind-the-scenes moments. “I missed Mindy and très grateful for these special gals!! Week 1 shooting Season 2 has been surreal and magic in many ways, we can’t wait to share with youuuuu.…”

So what's in store for these plucky gals? Star revealed Mindy and Emily will most likely be roommates in season two, and he would love to see Kate Walsh's character in Paris too.

But what everyone wants to know is what will happen between Emily, Gabriel, and Camille. If you recall, Gabriel and Camille broke up in the finale, and then Gabriel and Emily slept together when it looked like Gabriel was moving away. Camille is one of Emily's good friends, so the whole thing is suspect. To make matters stickier, Gabriel teamed up with Antoine to buy the restaurant he worked at, thereby keeping Gabriel in Paris. So…

Bravo got the Emily in Paris fandom talking when he theorized that perhaps there's something between Emily and Camille. “When Camille kisses Emily on the mouth, she's like, ‘Oh, I’m not sorry.’ And then when [Emily and Camille are] in bed, and I'm liking the picture, it's all little seeds. Anything could happen between the three of them,” he told Cosmopolitan. “I think Darren wants this second season to be really open-minded. He wants to explore different things and make it realistic of what the world is now.”

Bravo also told Glamour he thinks Gabriel loves Camille very much, “but he also shares a lot of [passion] with Emily.” “There’s sexual chemistry, yes, but there’s more to it than that,” he said. “I think he’s still in the process of understanding what’s going on, so we will have to wait for Darren to decide.”

Until then, you'll find us rewatching season one, buying Emily's phone case (which actually belonged to costume designer Patricia Field), and brushing up on our French. We'll update this post as more information becomes available.
