Emma Chamberlain On Her Hatred For Heels and How To Make Loungewear Look Polished

In the latest installment of 7 Days 7 Looks, Emma Chamberlain walks Vogue through a week in her low-key yet stylish wardrobe.

“I feel weird dressing up. It doesn’t feel organic for me,” 20-year-old YouTube sensation Emma Chamberlain muses as she walks Vogue through a week in her wardrobe. “I’m constantly trying to cheat my way into making it look like I put in more effort than I did.” While Chamberlain’s distaste for heels and her affinity for yoga pants suggests a more laid-back personal style, her laissez-faire approach to getting dressed comes not at the expense of stylishness. In fact, from loungewear for work or a mini skirt for date nights, Chamberlain’s outfits are a lesson in low-key—the social media star looks put together, cool, and polished in each of her 7 looks. She seems to give the term “dressed up” new meaning.

To kick things off, Chamberlain starts with her everyday look that she admittedly wears “probably four times a week.” The outfit’s base includes her favorite staples— vintage Levi’s 501s, a cropped white tank top, and Doc Martens creepers. “I never get sick of it,” she says, as she throws a leather jacket over her shoulders and finishes off the look with a Van Gogh emblazoned Louis Vuitton handbag and matching pair of blue-tinted sunglasses. “When I’m wearing a kind of bland outfit like this, I like to match the bag with the glasses. And I love black frames with colored lenses,” she says.

While loungewear can carry a stigma of casualness, Chamberlain illustrates how casual pieces can look polished, too. “I refuse to wear sweatpants that aren’t high-waisted. I also prefer to have a drawstring. It just makes sweatpants look cuter when you can tie them,” she says of her “work” look consisting of sweatpants, a T-shirt, and her tried-and-true Ugg slippers. “I feel like that’s the key with loungewear—you don’t have to choose loungewear that doesn’t flatter you. You can have fun with it and make it almost fashionable on its own.” For travel, the social media star opts for a pair of LuluLemon yoga pants, dressing them up with a crisp white turtleneck, sleek pair of white sneakers, and a reworked Patagonia vest and matching handbag by Tega Akinola. “I cannot bear the thought of wearing jeans on the plane, which is why my go-to pants are yoga pants. Always,” she says while taking a seat on a chair in her dressing room. “Look at their efficiency!”

Later in the episode, she demonstrates a mastery of unfussy going out clothes. “When I’m going out, I like to be a little more spicy,” she muses. For Chamberlain, that entails ultra-mini hemlines offset by platform boots or creepers. “I love crazy platform shoes,” she says, pairing her silver Alessandra Rich mini dress with chunky Marc Jacobs platform boots for an event look. And when dressed for a hypothetical date, she slips into a black mini skirt and graphic mesh top with platform creepers. “I really don’t think there’s such a thing as a dress that’s too short,” Chamberlain says. “For me, the shorter, the better because I’m also not super tall... things have to be short on me, or else I look like a little girl that got lost in her mom’s closet and started trying on the dresses.”
