‘Game of Thrones’ Tweeted ‘Winter Is Coming,’ and It’s Sending Fans Into Disarray

What. Is. Happening?

Game of Thrones was one of the most popular TV shows in the world when it was airing. Even now it's considered one of the best series of all time, despite its disappointing season-eight ending. Watching Bran end up on the Iron Throne and Jon Snow kill Daenerys Targarean left some fans feeling slighted by the creators.

Now the GoT Twitter account has fans scratching their head after it tweeted on April 14 the famous House of Stark family motto, “Winter is coming.” Since it's spring and it's actually summer that's coming, it's clear the account isn't referring to the actual seasons. So what could it mean?

The tweet already has more than 160,000 likes and more than 10,000 replies. The reactions are a mixture of intrigue and dismay. Like, how dare Game of Thrones tease anything! But also, what could it mean?!

I think it's safe to assume New York Times national politics reporter Anstead Wesley wasn't just speaking for himself when he tweeted, “If HBO wants me to watch a Game Of Thrones spin off I want a personal apology for season 8. 12 pt font, double spaced, no funny business on the margins.”

Other fans echoed similar sentiments. One wrote, “I want every 432 minutes i wasted watching season 8 removed from my memory bank.”

And if that seems harsh, one fan took it a step further: “#GameOfThrones really out here tweeting Winter Is Coming like we all don't remember that horrible final season.”

Meanwhile, others still have hope that Game of Thrones could redo the final season. This is highly unlikely, especially because multiple prequels are in the works—including House of Dragons, which is thought to premiere some time in 2022.

“Game of Thrones: Season 8 (The R. R. Martin cut) (George’s Version) (From the Vault): The Musical: The Series,” one fan joked about a possible next season.

In actuality, the tweet was most likely part of a remembrance in honor of the show's 10-year anniversary, which premiered on April 17, 2011. But hey, a fan can dream.
