Hailey Bieber Swears By This Hard-Working Retinol Alternative for Glowing Skin
Hailey Bieber has previously shared the skin-care products she loves to use daily, so we already trust she knows a thing or two about how to keep her complexion glowing and healthy. Like so many of us, the 24-year-old has learned some of that beauty wisdom from her mom, Kennya Baldwin, with whom she stars in the new BareMinerals campaign for its Ageless Phyto-Retinol collection.
“It was really, really fun,” Bieber told British Vogue. “I love being able to work with my mom—she was so cute on set. She was nervous but I was really impressed with how well she handled it.”
The shoot was the first time the pair have worked together in a professional capacity—and for a brand they are both fans of. Harnessing the power of the picão preto plant as a retinol alternative, the new line (which spans everything from an eye cream to a moisturizer) promises to deliver the same results as retinol—think smoother, more even skin—but without the flakiness and irritation that often comes with the well-loved active ingredient.
The beauty of the formulas is that they are suitable for all ages. “I think being able to find products to start with the antiaging process can be tricky at my age, because you don’t want to use anything too harsh,” says the model. “What I like about this collection is that it’s super gentle because it is plant-based. It doesn’t feel like it strips your skin or makes it flaky—I love the face cream and eye cream.” Bieber admits to “trying to stay on top of” remembering to apply products to her neck when she’s getting ready for bed at night, so the neck cream has also earned a place in her routine
The idea of normal retinol makes Bieber feel “weird” at this point in her life. “I’ve had conversations with a lot of different people that I trust in the skin care space who have expressed that they do not like retinol,” she says. “You can’t use retinol when you’re pregnant and, to me, if you can’t use it when you’re pregnant I don’t really know why you should be using it when you’re not. Obviously there’s a scientific explanation for why, but it feels like it’s not gentle enough and your body is absorbing something that’s not beneficial during that time—not that I’m pregnant or planning on that.”
Her mom is equally fastidious when it comes to her skin care regimen, preferring products that are organic, and she is well-versed in the benefits of feeding her skin from the inside with vitamins and other supplements. Bieber also shares her skin care recommendations with her mom regularly. At Christmas, she filled a big box with her favorite skin care products—including masks, moisturizers, tools, and devices—for her mom to play with.
As for the lessons she’s learned from her mom? “She’s kept her face out of the sun for a really long time and been really diligent about [wearing] SPF and making sure she’s protecting her face from the sun,” Bieber says. “She looks amazing, and she’s never had any Botox or anything done. She did that by just eating healthy and protecting herself from the sun. Listen, I love the sun and I put my body in it, but I don’t leave the house without wearing SPF everyday because I think it’s really important.”
