Hilaria Baldwin Returned to Instagram With Statement About the Accent Drama

“I’ve spent the last month listening, reflecting, and asking myself how I can learn and grow.”

Hilaria Baldwin hasn’t posted to Instagram since December 2020, when some controversy emerged surrounding her accent and upbringing. For a complete breakdown, click here, but the abridged version is this: People online started compiling evidence to prove that Baldwin has been “faking” her Spanish accent for years. She responded to the chatter with several videos, explaining how her family lives in Spain and that her accent comes from speaking both English and Spanish growing up.

She also spoke to The New York Times, saying, “My intentions are I’m living my life and my life is created by my parents, my different experiences, my languages, my culture.” She added, “This has been a part of my whole life, and I can’t make it go away just because some people don’t understand it.”

Nevertheless, the controversy persisted. Tweets, comments, and videos continued. The buzz eventually died down—as all things related to the internet do—but Hilaria Baldwin returned to Instagram on Friday, February 5, to clear things up once and for all. And apologize.

Read her statement in full, below:

“I’ve spent the last month listening, reflecting, and asking myself how I can learn and grow. My parents raised my brother and me with two cultures, American and Spanish, and I feel a true sense of belonging to both. The way I’ve spoken about myself and my deep connection to two cultures could have been better explained—I should have been more clear and I’m sorry. I’m proud of the way I was raised, and we’re raising our children to share the same love and respect for both. Being vulnerable and pushing ourselves to learn and grow is what we’ve built our community on, and I hope to get back to the supportive and kind environment we’ve built together.”
