How to Get ‘Filtered Skin,’ According to Hailey Bieber’s Makeup Artist

Look like an IRL Paris filter.

There's no question Hailey Bieber is an emerging style icon. And while she isn't afraid to experiment when it comes to fashion (remember that incredible Met Gala thong moment?), when it comes to beauty, she usually keeps it pretty low-key. Regardless of the look, though, her glowing skin stays consistent.

While genetics are likely at play—as are her favorite skin-care products—her makeup artist and BareMinerals ambassador Denika Bedrossia is also a key player in the model's glow. Which is why I jumped at the chance to chat with Bedrossia about her top five tips for glowing, “filtered” skin. Read on for her game-changing advice.

Skin care is key.

It's not a new tip, but it bears repeating: Skin prep is everything. “Using good skin care is going to be your number one important item for complexion,” says Bedrossian. She says to focus on a serum to get your skin in its best possible shape before applying makeup. “It doesn't matter how old you are, serum is going to help your skin,” says Bedrossian. “It's going to give you that bounce, it's going to give you that plump freshness that we all want and need, and it's going to be a longevity thing as well. If you start using these things now, your skin will never go through a bad stage. It's really important that you add all the goodness into it now so that it starts to build and creates this amazing base for your skin.” Her favorites are BareMinerals's PhytoRetinol, to smooth skin overnight, and the Long Life Herb Serum, to plump skin before makeup.

Use your fingers.

For the most natural finish, Bedrossian suggests applying your foundation with your fingers. After applying a dewy serum for prep, she likes to go in a with few drops of Original Liquid Mineral foundation, and press it into the skin by using her fingertips. “It's really easy, and it warms up to the skin and marries really beautifully,” she says.

Don’t be afraid of powder.

When glowing skin is the aim, it may be your first impulse to skip the powder, but it's actually crucial for getting that hyper-perfect airbrushed look—you just have to use it correctly. Bedrossian says to use a thin layer of pressed translucent powder on a brush (she loves the new powder from BareMinerals) to set your makeup as well as to “blur and soften everything.” If you have oily skin, she says to go a step further and use a puff to press the powder into areas you really need it— forehead, nose, chin. You can also do this on areas you need more smoothness like your undereyes or around the nose for that “super-super-smooth filtered kind of effect.”

Work with your skin.

In regard to complexion, it's all about working with your skin, not against it, for the most natural finish. “If you're oily, I would say do a final set [of powder] after you do your makeup on your whole face, and then as the day progresses, maybe you just do touch-ups in the areas that you need it,” Bedrossian says. Let some of your natural oils shine through on the areas you would apply highlighter to keep everything looking fresh and glowing. “A super-super-matte face is not really the trend right now. Leaving some of that natural dew in the skin is important and it's beautiful, and it's kind of the new go-to.”

Add some glow.

For subtle shine Bedrossian recommends tapping on a liquid highlighter as a final step. “They're great because you don't need a lot of makeup,” she says. She loves that you can add them to your whole face before foundation, for an allover glowy look, or after, for a more targeted highlight on cheekbones. “You want to keep it in the areas where light would hit and give skin a natural shine,” she says.
