In a sea of colorful style choices, the superstar chose snowy Chanel for a special rendition of “This Land Is Your Land” and “America the Beautiful.”
Jennifer Lopez Chose Suffragette White For Her Inauguration Day Performance
Inauguration Day has been resplendent with colorful ensembles: Vice President Kamala Harris wore purple Christopher John Rogers, while Dr. Jill Biden chose custom blue Markarian, and poet laureate Amanda Gorman shone in red and yellow. Jennifer Lopez, for her special rendition of “This Land Is Your Land” and “America the Beautiful,” strayed from the pack, but made a statement with her outfit all the same.
Lopez’s all white outfit was a nod to the suffragettes (Harris and Hillary Clinton also wore purple, the other official color of the U.S. women’s suffrage movement, which was a decades-long fight for the right for women to vote.) Her ensemble, from Chanel’s fall 2020 collection, included an ecru and tweed overcoat, a ruffled silk blouse, and sequined, high-waisted trousers; accessories such as crystal earrings and pearl bracelets, and heels by Jimmy Choo, also lent an elegant finish.
In the world of politicians, wearing the colors of the suffrage movement is a fashion statement frequently used to nod to history. In 2019, for instance, female lawmakers such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cotez, Nancy Pelosi, and Deb Haaland dressed in white as a statement of solidarity at the 2019 State of the Union, while awaiting President Trump’s remarks.
Yesterday, Lopez also stopped by the U.S. Capitol for rehearsals in a black-and-white Chanel ensemble consisting of a houndstooth coat and wide-leg trousers to match. Both of Lopez’s fashion choices were timeless, not to mention extremely glamorous (a J.Lo signature), and spoke to the special feel of the historic moment.
