Jill Biden Reprised Her Inauguration Dress for Her First Address to Congress—With a Twist

Obsessed.

Jill Biden has a knack for making a statement with her fashion choices. The first lady wore a navy dress at President Joe Biden's first address to Congress, and aside from being a gorgeous outfit, it's also a nod to her inauguration dress.

According to New York Times fashion director Vanessa Friedman, Dr. Biden asked Gabriela Hearst to design the dress in a darker shade for this occasion. The frock has embroidery similar to the flowers on the coat, mask, and dress the first lady wore to the inauguration.

“The message of Unity is the main inspiration for the creation of the Ensemble,” Hearst shared on Instagram about her inspiration behind the inauguration dress. “Unity makes strength and it is needed for the road ahead. The blooming symbol to represent this message are the federal flowers from every state and territory of the United States of America. The flowers are embroidered into the cashmere coat on the hem line in an [sic] pattern that rises organically on the side’s seams. On the dress, the embroidery is placed on the silk organza neckline and arms. The body of the dress is constructed in silk wool cady.”

The Delaware flower, the peach blossom, is placed at the heart level because the first lady received her bachelor's degree and a doctoral degree from the University of Delaware. Hearst adds that “from there, all the other flowers branch out.”

The designer revealed that she made the look in New York City. “The Embroidery and Coat were crafted in the garment district and the dress was assembled at the inhouse studio,” Hearst said. “Each flower took approximately two-four hours to embroider. Careful placements and color selections were carefully studied for weeks.”

Just throwing it out there: Jill Biden should have this dress made in every color. I need to see it in hot pink.
