John Legend Had the Calmest Response to Winning a Grammy

He barely looked up from making pasta.

On Sunday, March 14 John Legend won a Grammy. His 12th Grammy, in fact. And a big one—the Grammy for Best R&B Album of the year.

He barely looked up from making pasta.

In Chrissy Teigen's Instagram story, she shows her husband hard at work at a kitchen counter. “John won an album of the year!” she shouts. “What did you get?”

“R&B album of the year,” he says, not looking up from the cutting board. Legend is a winner for Bigger Love—this is his third time winning the Grammy for Best R&B album, after wins in 2006 and 2011. Other Grammy years have been giant for the Teigen-Legends. Think Legend's Best New Artist win in 2006! Teigen's outrageously beautiful outfits—last year she made giant orange ruffles work. This year, she was in a towel.

“How are you going to celebrate?” asks Teigen.

“I'm mincing garlic!” says Legend.

“Yayyyyyyyy,” they both chorus. Legend does a little dance, then returns to his garlic which, the viewer can see, has been beautifully pressed. Almost as if…by an award-winning man.

Look—when you are in a Versace bathrobe making cacio e pepe with your beautiful wife Chrissy Teigen, a 12th Grammy is simply a nice treat on top of an already lovely evening. Earlier in her story, Teigen had revealed plans to make elevated mac and cheese out of foot-long thick noodles, using a recipe from her Cravings cookbook. Her Lemony Arugula Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe calls for “four large cloves of garlic, minced.”

That just doesn't leave tons of spare time for reflecting on career accomplishments, even though Legend used, to my eye, garlic that came pre-peeled. As a professional journalist, I can also confirm that analysis of the video clip shows that Legend had already minced five cloves at the time of the win, and was in the process of mincing a sixth. Plus, someone in the household had already diced at least a quarter-pound of pancetta. It seems like it was an exhausting but rewarding night, all around.

Lest you worry that Legend prioritized pasta over graciousness, he also tweeted his thanks. “I’m so grateful for this!" he wrote, "Thank you to all of my fellow artists in the @RecordingAcad! Thank you to all of my collaborators, especially my big brother and exec producer @RaphaelSaadiq! Thank you to everyone who listened! Love you all!” Humble, handy in the kitchen, focused on carbs with a singleminded determination—this, we can respect.

Frankly, whomst among us hasn't been mincing garlic during a major life event? Celebrities—they're not that much like us, but if they're going to let us peer into their lives of privilege and opulence, we do want to see designer bathrobes and massive amounts of pasta.

Congrats to John Legend, on an all-around triumphant night of cooking and music.
