Judge Denies Britney Spears’s Request to Remove Dad Jamie From Conservatorship
Britney Spears’s conservatorship case has a new development. Before his client gave her shocking testimony about her conservatorship, Britney’s attorney, Samuel Ingham III, submitted a request to have her father, Jamie Spears, removed as conservator of her estate. But new court documents filed by the Los Angeles Superior Court show a judge has denied the request.
“The conservator’s request to suspend James P. Spears immediately upon the appointment of Bessemer Trust Company of California as sole conservator of estate is denied without prejudice,” the court documents filed on Wednesday, June 30, stated.
The paperwork shows that the judge approved Bessemer Trust as co-conservator but also includes the decision to keep Jamie part of the conservatorship. Despite Britney’s recent appearance in court, the judge’s ruling is not based on her testimony. The pop icon’s legal team still has to file a petition to end the conservatorship, which was put into place in 2008. (Under this legal arrangement, Britney has no legal control over her life and finances.)
On June 23, Britney Spears addressed the court directly and said she wants her conservatorship to end. “I deserve to have a life. I’ve worked my whole life. I deserve to have a two- to three-year break and just, you know, do what I want to do,” she said, per Variety. “But I do feel like there is a crutch here. And I feel open and I’m okay to talk to you today about it. But I wish I could stay with you on the phone forever, because when I get off the phone with you, all of a sudden all I hear are these no’s—no, no, no. And then all of a sudden I feel ganged up on and I feel bullied and I feel left out and alone. And I’m tired of feeling alone.”
She continued, “I deserve to have the same rights as anybody does, by having a child, a family, any of those things, and more so.”
