This morning, Kate Middleton delivered the keynote speech at The Forward Trust’s “Taking Action on Addiction” campaign event in London. The Duchess of Cambridge spoke about the misconceptions of addiction, and shared resources around how more people can better receive and ask for help. For the occasion, Middleton wore a red Ralph Lauren turtleneck sweater and matching pleated skirt that was perfectly polished and appropriate for the event. Accessories-wise, she then leaned into fall’s early tones and the burgeoning color-blocking trend—but in her own refined way.

To balance out the fiery-red sweater and skirt, Middleton finished off the look with sleek, brown accessories, including stiletto pumps and a leather top-handle bag by DeMellier (one of her favorite bag brands). Middleton is clearly on to something with pairing brown and red together: that combination also trended on the fall runways at Max Mara, Ulla Johnson, and Boss.

It’s not the first time Middleton has worn this perfect fall color pairing. She also wore the same bag and shoes with a red coat by Eponine London back in September. The pairings work because brown is still a basic that goes with everything, yet it’s a tad more unexpected than your standard black or cream accessories. Compared to, say, the extreme neon color-clashing recently worn by Victoria Beckham, Middleton’s approach to color-blocking is certainly more wearable and autumnal. Consider it a fall color palette that you can’t go wrong with.
