Awards season hasn’t started, but Kristen Stewart’s performance in Spencer is already generating buzz. On the surface, Stewart’s edgy Hollywood image and Diana’s public persona seem opposed. Since the film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in September, critics have focused on the transformation she undergoes to portray the royal accurately. Still, the two women have more in common than one would think, especially regarding fashion. Both are avid Chanel enthusiasts with a knack for dressing up casual outfits. Case in point, when Stewart headed to a taping of the Today show this morning in New York, she wore one of Diana’s favorite pieces: bike shorts.

In the mid-’90s Diana helped to popularize all-hours gym wear. Regularly photographed after her morning workouts at London’s Chelsea Harbour Club, the princess’s post-gym outfits became fashion statements. Diana foreshadowed the mix of luxury and gym wear that has become the norm by accessorizing her sneakers and leggings with upscale pieces like Gucci’s Bamboo tote and oversized sunglasses. Now, bike shorts are appropriate at even the most formal occasions, and stars like Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez tote their Birkins to the fitness center.

Stewart’s Today show ensemble adhered to those principles. Mixing a little black jacket from Chanel’s resort 2022 collection with black bike shorts, a white tank top, and Nike’s low retro Dunks, she combined high fashion classics with accessible pieces. Stewart and her stylist Tara Swennen are known for keeping things cool, but their latest look managed to represent the actor’s laid-back style and the iconic royal she plays on screen.
