Kylie Jenner’s Optical-Illusion Catsuit Is By a Rising Designer

Cardi B has worn this buzzy label, too.

Last night, Kylie Jenner stepped out for dinner at Nobu in Malibu, California in a totally casual outfit: a printed catsuit, a mini Hermès Kelly bag, and metallic pointed pumps. Hey, it’s just your average Monday night outfit for Jenner! The optical-illusion one-piece she wore, with a heat-map-like body outline on the front, is indeed worthy of a runway. Even better, it’s by an up-and-coming designer from Central Saint Martins, who is fast becoming a celebrity favorite.

Jenner’s striking catsuit—which looks like it’s “from another planet,” as she put it on her Instagram—was custom-made for her by designer Pierre-Louis Auvray, known as @forbiddenkn0wledge on Instagram. Auvray is known for his shapely 3-D pieces, which are often made out of foam and latex. “The inspiration for the print on the coat and jumpsuit [that Jenner wears] came from ’80s illustrations, and science fiction-cyberpunk aesthetics,” Auvray tells Vogue of his latest creation. “When looking at the work of [artists] Hajime Sorayama or Pater Sato, there’s always a mix of fantasy and eroticism, and I’m very inspired by this when I draw my own prints.” To achieve the print on Jenner’s suit, he airbrushed the silhouette of a body onto shiny scuba fabric, “as if it was trapped within the garments,” he says.

Auvray’s designs have become a celebrity favorite this year. Back in January, Cardi B also wore one of his 3-D dresses on the streets of L.A., marking his first major A-lister moment. With Jenner on board with his vision too, he hopes to see the celebrity momentum continuing forward. “It’s very gratifying,” says Auvray of seeing his work in the tabloids. “I graduated three years ago and I’ve had so many amazing experiences. Every moment like this really makes me feel like there are people besides me who appreciate my work!”
