Lil Nas X is hardly a wallflower. The boundary-breaking rapper’s risks with his music and fashion choices always pay off. Just take his three winning looks at the Met Gala this year, which included an ornate cape, golden armor, and glittery bodysuit worn underneath (all custom designed by Versace). But even Nas’s more subdued style is a hit. At the WSJ Awards in New York last night, he showed up in a black outfit that was anything but boring. In fact, his quirky bag, statement shoes, and glorious skirt made for the perfect combo.

The rapper hit up the event in a Thom Browne ensemble, consisting of a long, sleek black overcoat with a white collared shirt and pleated skirt—way more interesting than your standard black suit. His dog-shaped top-handle bag added a whimsical accent, while his staggering Rick Owens platforms—of which Hunter Schafer is also a fan—added height. At this point, men in heels and skirts is nothing new, but there’s something powerful about the rapper infusing them into an otherwise-minimal outfit. The whole vibe says, “yes, I can do pared-back style—but without being a total snooze.” That’s a fashion lesson we can all learn from!
