The rapper gave us not one, but two fearless fashion moments.
Lil Nas X’s BET Awards Looks Were His Best Yet
Last night’s BET Awards were a fashion spectacle (see Zendaya’s ode to Beyoncé, for one). Guests like Lil Kim and Jennifer Hudson brought their best style forward for the event. But a real standout was Lil Nas X, styled by Hodo Musa, who delivered two stellar moments on the step and repeat. The “Montero” rapper performed an elaborate costume change that had us thinking he was Lady Gaga at the Met Gala.
Lil Nas X began his fashion adventure in a dramatic, full-skirted gown by the emerging, Italian designer Andrea Grossi. The dress, with a wide pannier, toile print, and open neckline, is from a collection where Grossi explored themes and prints around Catholicism, something that the rapper also touches on his single, “Montero.” A few moments later, the rapper re-appeared on the carpet in a fully-embroidered Richard Quinn suit from the label’s fall 2021 collection. With its flared pants, crystal embellishments, and baroque-style florals, the over-the-top suit was something plucked right out of Elton John’s closet.
Lil Nas X’s greatness on the red carpet last night was about more than just pulling off two statement looks. The rapper’s grand gown not only thoughtfully tied into his own music themes, but also was an effective display of queer pride. (His performance also had people talking, where he shared a long kiss with one of his backup dancers). Bold and fearless, it was one of his best fashion moments yet.
