Lizzo Corrected a Paparazzo Who Misgendered Demi Lovato (Twice)
Lizzo is not here for misgendering. A paparazzo recently approached the “Truth Hurts” singer and asked about Demi Lovato, saying, "Do you have a message for Demi? Should she reach out?" But Lizzo quickly corrected the individual and said Lovato uses they/them pronouns.
Unfortunately, the message didn't quite sink in. As captured by a video posted to a fan account, this person then asked the star a question about “her team,” once again referring to Lovato, to which Lizzo replied, "Their team, Demi goes by they." (People has more details.)
On social media, Lovato re-posted the video to their Instagram Stories and wrote, “@lizzobeeating you f-cking queen I love you 😘thank you 🥺🙏.” Legends supporting legends.
We're not sure what the uninformed pap was referring to in the “reach out” comment, but it looks like the two singers are in contact now! Or at least, we know Lizzo's got Demi's back, and Demi's appreciative.
Lovato came out as non-binary in May 2021, saying, “Every day we wake up, we are given another opportunity and chance to be who we want and wish to be...Today is a day I'm so happy to share more of my life with you all - I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary and will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward 💖 This has come after a lot of healing and self-reflective work.”
Later that month, they told Jane Fonda in an interview, "I just started listening to me, which I ended up finding out was equal parts masculine and feminine. When I stripped myself of the norms that society has pushed on me, specifically by the patriarchy, I have become the most complete and authentic version of myself that I've ever been in my life. I've never been happier.”
