Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Are Helping a Texas Women's Shelter in a Big Way
Making good on their promise to lead a life of service, newly-liberated royals Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are helping out Texas, which has recently been hit by a winter storm that left millions without power.
Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support announced on February 21 that their organization, which provides shelter and counseling to women and children who have experienced domestic violence, received a donation from Prince Harry and Markle's Archewell Foundation. Per their announcement, “[Harry and Meghan] are supporting [Genesis] by replacing the roof at our transitional housing facility & helping us meet our immediate needs.”

The storm and subsequent floods in Texas did major damage to the shelter's facilities. Per People, Genesis had to “completely shut its doors for the first time in close to 40 years of operation" but has since re-opened. In a typical year, the organization serves around 3,700 women and children.
Jan Langbein, CEO of the company, praised Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for their generosity, saying in a statement, "Not only will this gift provide for our critical needs, it shines an international spotlight on violence against women and children, letting survivors know that they are not alone.”

The couple revealed on Valentine's Day 2021 that they are expecting their second child together, and shortly thereafter announced, as did Buckingham Palace, that they would not be returning to their positions as senior, working members of the royal family. (They announced their departure last year on a trial basis, with plans to review their situation 12 months later. Now, it's permanent.) Markle and Prince Harry were sure to note that despite Queen Elizabeth II's statement about private citizens not leading a life of public service, they think “service is universal.” As we can see, they're committed to putting their money where their principles are.
