Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Have Already Told Us What Baby Girl Names They Like
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's daughter is due some time this summer, and oddsmakers are already taking bets as to what they'll name their second child. Obviously, Diana and Elizabeth are both in the mix, but what about other monikers? The couple has previously expressed interest in simple, classic names, but it's really anyone's guess.
In 2019, while preparing for the birth of their son, Archie, Markle and Prince Harry met with schoolchildren in Birkenhead, including a young girl named Megan who, like the duchess, goes by “Meg” among friends. Per People, the girl told reporters at the time, “I asked [Meghan Markle] whether she would call her baby Amy if she has a girl, and she said, 'That's a really pretty name, I like it. We'll have to think about it.'”
People has compiled a list of similar encounters. At the same event, Prince Harry asked a mother how she spells her daughter Lily's name, so add Amy and Lily to the list of potential royal baby names.
According to People, another moment like this occurred in 2018 during a tour of Australia, when Prince Harry said to a fan, “That's a great name,” after learning their daughter was named Harriet.
A gambling site in the U.K. has “Philippa” as a top contender ever since the death of Prince Harry's grandfather, Prince Philip. Naming a child after a relative is hardly unprecedented; Prince William and Kate Middleton named their daughter Charlotte, which, after all, is the female equivalent of “Charles,” the brothers' dad's name.
Perhaps the biggest clue in this mini-mystery is Archie's name: It wasn't on anyone's radar before it was announced, and it doesn't have any obvious connection to previous royals. It's just a cute, modern name for a little SoCal boy. I bet their daughter's name gets the same treatment.
