Here's why.
Meghan Markle Is Wearing One of Princess Diana’s Bracelets in the Oprah Interview
The legacy of Princess Diana is clearly important to her son, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan Markle. In a preview of the couple’s upcoming interview with Oprah Winfrey, Prince Harry references his mother, speaking on his fear that “history will repeat itself” when it comes to Markle. Now viewers have spotted another Princess Diana connection in the interview: The diamond tennis bracelet Markle is wearing originally belonged to the late Princess of Wales.
Per a source that spoke to People, the couple “wanted Meghan…to wear the bracelet during the interview so Diana could be with them.”
Meghan Markle is currently expecting her second child; with Prince Harry himself being a second child, it’s an especially poignant time for the couple. People also points out Markle is wearing a black Armani dress in the interview with the image of a lotus flower on it, which may represent resilience.
In 1995, Princess Diana sat down with the BBC’s Panorama program for her own tell-all interview. Prince Harry may be breaking with royal tradition by doing a sit-down, but he’s also following in his mother’s footsteps.
The interview will air on CBS March 7. Though it was originally scheduled to run 90 minutes, it was expanded to two hours to include more of the conversation. In a preview, Winfrey makes it clear “there is no subject that’s off-limits,” and her best friend, reporter Gayle King, says Winfrey considers this “the best interview she’s ever done.”
“Were you silent or were you silenced?” Winfrey asks Markle at one point. Later she says to the Duchess of Sussex, “‘Almost unsurvivable’ sounds like there was a breaking point.” What are they talking about?!
And then Winfrey notes, “You’ve said some pretty shocking things here.” Listen, if you’re trying to make us intrigued, you have succeeded. We are going to tune the eff in.
