“I don’t know how they could expect that after all of this time, we would still just be silent.”
Meghan Markle Says the Royal Family Played a Role in ‘Perpetuating Falsehoods’ About Her
On March 3, CBS released a new clip from Oprah Winfrey’s explosive, two-hour interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. In it Winfrey asks Markle directly about the royal family.
“How do you feel about the palace hearing you speak your truth today?” Winfrey asks Markle, who replies, “I don’t know how they could expect that after all of this time, we would still just be silent if there is an active role that The Firm is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us.”
Markle continues, “And if that comes with risk of losing things, there’s a lot that’s been lost already.”
The phrase The Firm is a colloquial (albeit cynical) term used to describe the royal family. Royals biographer Penny Junor used it as the title of her book The Firm: The Troubled Life of the House of Windsor. The description of the book explains the term’s meaning: "However you look at it, the royal family is a big business…. Prince Philip calls it ‘The Firm,’ and all the royal executives and their powerful associates are supposed to make every effort to avoid even a hint of scandal that could diminish the reputation of the family business.”
As we know, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s decision to step down as senior working royals caused a scandal. From this new clip, it appears the royal family will be cast in a negative light during the interview, which is obviously something they don’t want.
Recently, a report was published that alleges Meghan Markle wore a pair of earrings in 2018 that were gifted by Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman. Mohammed was recently found by U.S. intelligence to be responsible for the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Meghan Markle’s lawyers say, via The Telegraph, that she didn’t know there was speculation the prince was involved with Khashoggi’s murder when she wore the earrings.
People are showing their support for Markle on social media. Vice President Kamala Harris’s niece, Meena Harris, tweeted, “Keep Meghan Markle’s name out of your damn mouth. You are racist.”

One person compared the scrutiny Princess Diana received before her tragic death to Markle’s situation. They tweeted, “Gonna support and defend Meghan Markle the way my mom did with Princess Diana.”
